You're never too young
Bowel cancer doesn't just affect older people. Around 350 New Zealanders under 50 are diagnosed every year. Know the signs – early detection saves lives.

Anyone can get bowel cancer – at any age
Every day in Aotearoa, nine people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and three will lose their lives. It's New Zealand's second deadliest cancer.
Around 350 people under 50 are diagnosed every year with early-onset bowel cancer. Many face long delays before getting the tests they need – because they're told they're “too young” for bowel cancer.
When found early, up to 90% of bowel cancer cases are curable. That's why awareness and timely diagnosis matter so much.
What we're calling for
Greater awareness
Among the public and health professionals that bowel cancer can affect people of any age.
Faster testing & diagnosis
Symptomatic younger people need timely access to colonoscopy – not months of waiting.
Age-appropriate, culturally responsive care
Treatment pathways and support services tailored to younger people diagnosed with bowel cancer and their whānau.
Lower the screening age to 45
Increased colonoscopy capacity and screening from age 45, matching international best practice.
February 2026
The Never Too Young report
Drawing on the experiences of over 350 New Zealanders diagnosed under 50, this report captures delayed referrals, inconsistent access to colonoscopy, and the significant personal and financial toll of treatment during life's busiest years.
Formally launched at Parliament in February 2026, the report outlines practical opportunities to improve symptom awareness, strengthen diagnostic pathways, and progress screening reform.

Real people. Real stories.
Our Never Too Young ambassadors share their experiences to raise awareness and help others facing a bowel cancer diagnosis.
